This can lead to cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver failure. PBC is a progressive disease that may have no symptoms for many years. Treating PBC can help keep the liver functioning normally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOcaliva\u003c\/strong\u003e was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on an \"accelerated\" basis. In clinical studies, some people with PBC responded to this medicine, but further studies are needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is not known if taking \u003cstrong\u003eOcaliva\u003c\/strong\u003e will improve your chance of survival or improve your symptoms of PBC..\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch5\u003eHow should I use this medication?\u003c\/h5\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTake \u003cstrong\u003eOcaliva\u003c\/strong\u003e exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTake with or without food.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou may be given medication to prevent itching, a common side effect of \u003cstrong\u003eOcaliva\u003c\/strong\u003e.
