Oxcarbazepine and MHD block voltage-sensitive sodium channels.   This has the effects of stabilizing hyperexcited neuronal membranes, inhibiting repetitive firing, and decreasing the propagation of synaptic impulses, which are suspected to be the mechanism of it preventing the spread of seizures.
